Here in Liverpool, we have two Green councillors, and the local party is running an open nomination process for our Parliamentary Candidate selection. Like most commentators, I fully expect the next General Election to take place in May 2010.
I'm not going to be standing for Westminster in 2010, as a simultaneous Local and General Election means that it makes sense for our General Election candidate to also be someone who is contesting one of our local target seats. As the local ERO, I'm pleased to say we've had quite a bit of interest so far, and we've already had plenty of requests for nomination packs.
I certainly enjoyed standing in 2005 and the experience you pick up is invaluable. It also gave us a boost ahead of the 2006 local elections. The fact that we've now got Green councillors in Liverpool is bound to increase our General Election performance. Our aim is to give everyone in the city an opportunity to vote Green in all elections, and this is an important step on the way.
